Rob Decker, a suicide survivor and founder of Rise as Lions, is using his experience to help others struggling with mental health and addiction during Suicide Prevention Month.
Decker, who battled suicidal thoughts and addiction from a young age, now works with Homeward Pikes Peak and runs his own organization, Rise as Lions, to provide resources and support to those in need.
“I just want to be a beacon of hope for those individuals,” said Rob Decker, reflecting on his journey from addiction and a suicide attempt to recovery and purpose.
Decker’s struggles began in his teenage years, leading to self-harm and eventually drug and alcohol abuse. Despite surviving a suicide attempt, he continued to face challenges with addiction and mental health for several years.
His path to recovery involved finding faith and a supportive community, which helped him discover hope and purpose in his life. “I started learning more about myself. I started finding hope and purpose in my life,” Decker explained.
Through Rise as Lions, Decker aims to connect with others who have faced similar struggles, offering understanding and support. “When you’ve actually lived it yourself, it’s easier to connect with people because you understand that darkness, that emptiness,” he said.
In addition to his work with Rise as Lions, Decker has authored a book titled ‘God’s Awning,’ which details his personal struggles and aims to inspire others facing tough times.
Decker’s story is a testament to the power of resilience and community support in overcoming mental health challenges. “We all have a purpose in this life,” he said, encouraging others to fight through their struggles and find their own path to helping others.
If you or a loved one is struggling, community resources, such as the 988 Mental Health Line, provide nationwide support and direct individuals to local options. 988 is open 24/7 and is available to call, text, or video chat.
