(PUEBLO COUNTY, Colo.) — The Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) has earned its third Triple Crown award from the National Sheriff’s Association, joining an elite group of Sheriff’s offices across the country.
According to PCSO, the Triple Crown designation is achieved when a sheriff’s office attains simultaneous accreditation through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement (CALEA), the Commission on Accreditation for Corrections (CAC) of the American Correctional Association (ACA), and the National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC).
PCSO is one of only 52 sheriff’s offices in the country to have attained Triple Crown status and is one of only four agencies to get Triple Crown accreditation under three different sheriffs.
PCSO earned its first Triple Crown Accreditation in 2001 during Sheriff Dan Corsentino’s tenure. The second Triple Crown was received by Sheriff Kirk M. Taylor in 2017. Sheriff David J. Lucero got the third Triple Crown in 2024.
“The standards that we have met to earn the respective accreditations are not easy,” Lucero said. “We have an aging and outdated jail and continue to be understaffed, but we’ve been able to achieve all the standards needed for accreditation, and that’s a result of the hard work of our dedicated employees.”
