(PUEBLO, Colo.) — Around 50 volunteers gathered in Pueblo on Wednesday, Aug. 20, to revitalize homes in low-income neighborhoods. It was part of the YMCA’s 2025 Corporate Cup Togetherhood Initiative.
The initiative, supported by corporate partners and the City, focused on homes in the Bessemer and Eastside neighborhoods, which were selected based on need. BAHA Construction contributed about 100 hours to the project ahead of the finishing touches on Wednesday.
“The intent of the project is really just to show togetherhood and community by helping others out and doing a community service project,” said Alexis Romero Stewart, the Housing and Community Development Specialist for the City of Pueblo.
The average home in Pueblo is over 55 years old. The City says projects like these help preserve older properties and invest in the community’s future.
John Goetz, Plant Manager at the local GCC, brought his staff to the event to volunteer. He said, “It’s not just for the community, but also the homeowner. So, we’re here to help wherever we can… like I said, partnering with the Y and the City and everybody working together piece by piece, to make it a brighter place to be.”
It’s a pilot program that other people could apply to in the future if all goes well.
Mo Ghamdi, Vice President at BAHA Construction, said, “I know they are trying to get more grants to help more citizens here. A lot of people in the city need it, and they would appreciate it if they could get it.”
The owner of one of the homes said she was thrilled for the much-needed facelift.
“They were very excited because if it wasn’t for this project, they may not have been able to do this otherwise. So, just very grateful for the volunteers, the Y, the City, BAHA, for all that they are doing,” said Stewart.
