(COLORADO SPRINGS) — K9 Riggs took down a crowbar-wielding suspect after he allegedly set fire to a victim’s belongings during a domestic violence incident and ran to a nearby business area, where he began breaking windows of businesses and vehicles, according to the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD).
CSPD reported that on Saturday, Sept. 27, around 10 p.m., officers responded to a domestic violence-related incident, including felony menacing with a weapon, in the 2500 block of Centennial Boulevard, near West Fillmore Street and I-25.
Before the officers had arrived, the suspect had allegedly set fire to the victim’s belongings and run off. When officers and crew from the Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) arrived, they provided aid to the victim and worked to contain the fire, which threatened nearby homes.
In the meantime, the suspect began breaking windows of businesses and vehicles in the 3400 block of Centennial Boulevard, north of Fillmore, causing thousands of dollars in damage, according to CSPD. Officers, accompanied by K9 Riggs, were nearby and heard breaking glass, leading them to the suspect, later identified as 25-year-old Jordan Ahola.
CSPD reported that Ahola was wielding a crowbar and refused to obey when officers ordered him to drop the weapon. Ahola raised the crowbar and began to approach the officers. The officers warned Ahola that if he did not drop the weapon and surrender, K9 Riggs would be released. Ahola tried to run, but Riggs was let loose and chased him, catching him by the arm and forcing him to the ground. Ahola dropped the crowbar.
According to CSPD, the officers were able to quickly place him in handcuffs and take him to the hospital, where he was treated for minor abrasions and puncture wounds from his encounter with Riggs. He was later booked into the Criminal Justice Center.
No officers were injured during the arrest, including K9 Riggs.
