(COLORADO SPRINGS) — On Saturday, Sept. 20, the Colorado Springs Police Department’s (CSPD) newest K9, Roam, helped catch a suspect after detectives tracked down a stolen truck that was connected to a convenience store robbery.
According to CSPD, around 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, detectives with the Metro Motor Vehicle Theft Unit found the truck in the area of South Institute Street, near Pikes Peak Avenue, and identified it as a vehicle that earlier in the week had been used in the robbery, during which the suspect had threatened to shoot the clerk.
Detectives identified the person driving the vehicle as the suspect from the robbery, and with the assistance of tactical teams from both CSPD and the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, police attempted to contact the vehicle. The suspect got out and ran away, ignoring the officers’ orders to stop, and reaching into his pocket as he ran, according to police.
CSPD reported that a Tactical Enforcement Unit (TEU) officer and his K9, Roam, were in the area, and the officer warned the suspect that Roam would be released if the suspect didn’t stop. The suspect kept running, and Roam was released. Roam chased the suspect and caught him by biting his right triceps. The suspect struggled with Roam, but TEU officers were able to quickly get control, and Roam let go.
The suspect was taken into custody and transported to the hospital, where he was treated for minor punctures and lacerations from his encounter with Roam. He was later booked into the Criminal Justice Center on an outstanding felony warrant from Arapahoe County, as well as new charges for Aggravated Motor Vehicle Theft and Aggravated Robbery.
CSPD stated that this is an ongoing investigation and the suspect’s name is not being released at this time.
