(COLORADO SPRINGS) —Schriever and Peterson Space Force Bases in Colorado Springs addressed childcare shortages during their first-ever joint state bases address on Wednesday, Aug. 13.
Military leaders discussed the rapid growth of the Space Force and the challenges it presents, including resource constraints like office space and childcare.
“Schriever is one of those areas where we are at 114% over our space utilization,” said Col. Eric Bogue of Schriever Space Force Base.
Col. Ken Klock noted, “It hasn’t reduced our waitlist to zero, but it has significantly dropped it here by 150 slots.”
The installations are working with community partnerships to find solutions to these challenges. Peterson Space Force Base plans to expand its pilot program to cover childcare costs off base, aiming to reduce the waitlist for military families.
Schriever Space Force Base has made a significant economic impact by creating over 6,000 local jobs and contributing $1.197 billion to the local economy. The introduction of Space Base 41, which launched 56 days ago, was highlighted for its role in operational capability and its importance to the U.S. military.
Schriever also plans to open a new fitness center next month as part of its ongoing expansion efforts.
The collaboration between Schriever and Peterson Space Force Bases and their local community is crucial as they navigate the challenges of rapid growth and resource management.
