(PUEBLO, Colo.) — The 10th Judicial District Attorney’s (DA) Office announced that on Friday, Sept. 26, William Montoya pled guilty to shooting and killing his nephew in 2023.
According to the DA’s Office, on July 3, 2023, Montoya shot and killed his nephew, 29-year-old Marcos Baca, then fired additional shots at Baca’s mother and stepfather, stole Baca’s vehicle, and then drove to the home of Baca’s girlfriend, shooting at her house while she was inside with her children.
PPD said on July 4, 2023, a car involved in the incident was recovered, and Montoya was arrested. Montoya pled guilty to one count of second-degree murder and three counts of attempted second-degree murder.
Montoya will serve a stipulated 78-year prison sentence followed by a mandatory period of 14 years parole. The DA’s Office said the agreement was reached after discussions with Baca’s family, who are in support of the disposition.
“This plea agreement functions essentially as a life sentence for Montoya due to his heinous actions,” said DA Kala Beauvais. “Our thoughts remain with Mr. Baca’s family, and we hope this disposition helps them find some measure of peace. The District Attorney’s Office remains committed to seeking justice for all victims and holding perpetrators accountable for their actions.”
