(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Charlie Kirk, a conservative political activist, was supposed to speak at the Truth & Liberty Conference in Southern Colorado, but he was assassinated before the event.
The conference proceeded as planned, with organizers using Kirk’s death as a moment to bring people together.
Supporters of Kirk gathered outside Charis Bible College in Woodland Park to honor his memory, lining the streets with signs and gestures of support.
The Truth & Liberty Conference, originally intended to celebrate the conservative values Kirk championed, became a somber memorial in his honor.
“I believe that with every honk that is received, every wave, every recognition of Charlie shows his love, how much people loved him,” said Karen Little, a resident of Woodland Park.
“Even in his death, his movement is going to live on,” Little added. “They may have silenced his voice, but you can never silence what he stood for.”
Heidi Parkinson, another Kirk supporter from Colorado Springs, described Kirk as “a man of God” who “stood strong” despite facing hate.
Little, who lives across the street from Charis Bible College, stood outside the college for several hours holding a sign asking others to honk in support of Kirk. Little noted the positive reactions she received, including smiles, waves, and thumbs-up signs from passersby.
The Truth & Liberty Conference organizers decided to continue the event as scheduled, honoring Kirk with a tribute video.
The video provided his supporters with one last chance to see what he dedicated his life to.
Many attendees expressed their desire to continue spreading Kirk’s message, focusing on principles of freedom, free markets, and limited government.
Little emphasized the importance of coexistence, stating, “We don’t have to agree on everything… But we can coexist peacefully.”
