(COLORADO) — On Saturday, May 24, Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) issued an alert urging the Colorado Springs community, and others near coyote territories, to exercise caution after two recent attacks on dogs in the area.
According to CPW, both dogs were on six-foot leashes with their owners when the attacks occurred, one near Palmer Park and one at Rockrimmon Open Space.
CPW stated that coyotes can become more aggressive while protecting their young, from the time that they have their pups, around February, through when they typically finish raising them, around June.
Community members are advised to keep their pets on leashes while on walks, indoors at night, or in fully enclosed kennels.
Coyotes will show aggression like dogs, by raising their hackles, baring teeth, and growling.
If you spot a coyote, do not approach it and give it as much space as possible. Shout loudly and with a commanding voice, wave your arms, clap your hands, and throw objects at the coyote. If it doesn’t leave, face the coyote and back away slowly. Contact CPW to report aggressive coyotes.
From now until June, CPW said that wildlife will become more visible in backyards, open spaces and on trails and reminds the public to respect wildlife and to leave them and their young alone.
