(FREMONT COUNTY, Colo.) — The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) released a report on the officer-involved shooting that took place on Friday, Aug. 29, in Cañon City that sent both a deputy from the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office and the suspect to the hospital.
According to CBI, the incident began when a deputy responded to a home in the 1400 block of Chestnut Street, near Grand Avenue, a little after 6 p.m. for a welfare check. When the deputy arrived, a 27-year-old man armed with a firearm was barricaded in the home. During the encounter, the suspect was shot by the deputy and taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
CBI reported that the deputy was not hit by gunfire, but following the incident, he experienced a medical event and was taken to the hospital. He has since been released.
In the following investigation, CBI agents found what appeared to be several explosive devices in the home. The Pueblo Metro Bomb Squad responded and determined that the devices, including four made of plastic and one made of metal, were inert. They were safely confiscated by the bomb squad, according to CBI.
CBI reported that as part of the investigation, the body-worn camera footage that was filmed during the incident is being reviewed. The suspect is expected to be taken into custody on charges of 1st Degree Assault, Menacing, and Prohibited Use of a Weapon, once he is released from the hospital.
