(PUEBLO, Colo.) — Pueblo County High School’s marching band won its first state championship in 15 years on Oct. 25, achieving a score of 76.550, and on Thursday, Nov. 6, the school hosted an assembly to celebrate its success.
“They are all gathered for an assembly to see the hard work we’ve put in this season,” said Alana Mills, flute co-section leader. “I think sometimes we feel like we don’t get enough recognition or maybe they don’t understand fully what we do, so we show them.”
The band narrowly secured victory by a single point, showcasing their performance titled ‘Space Cowboys.’
“We are state champions at Pueblo County High School for the first time since 2010 of Class 3A marching band,” said Josh Muller, Pueblo County High School band director. “We were looking at doing something that is sort of a mash-up up and we wanted to do a space show. And it was literally like a lightning bolt. I just said “Space Cowboys” and I knew it immediately was going to be a great show.”
The championship win marks a significant achievement for the Pueblo County High School marching band, reflecting months of dedication and practice.
“Once it hit a point in our music and like marching outside, I really saw it come together, and it kind of made me a little emotional,” said Brynn Hambric, drum major.
The band’s performance, ‘Space Cowboys,’ captivated the audience and judges alike, contributing to their high score.
“Not just my hard work, but the whole entire band’s hard work, like every single section… Definitely Mr. Muller and all the section leaders, all of our boosters, we just all really came together, and it just happened so perfectly,” said Peyton Bialpando, mellophone player.
The final performance highlighted the band’s precision and creativity.
“I was proud of these kids, win or lose, because you don’t get to play defense against another band,” said Muller. “You don’t get to… You don’t know how good they’re going to be, and you don’t get to affect how good other bands are. But to get that little pat on the back was pretty amazing. It’s a great feeling.”
