(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Dozens of protesters gathered downtown in front of the Colorado Springs City Hall on Saturday, Aug. 2, as part of the national Rage Against the Regime protest in opposition to the administration of President Donald Trump.
“I feel like if we could get our voices heard, people understand that we’re not capitulating,” said Tom Howes, a volunteer with 50501.
Signs reading “American first, dump Trump” and “Hate does not make us great again,” lined the sidewalks of downtown Colorado Springs as dozens of people joined the nationwide protest.
“Everyone is here because we’re really concerned about everything that’s going on in our federal government right now, “said Jamey Smith, congressional candidate for Colorado District five. “All of the different cuts that they’re making, all of the extremism that’s going on, said Jamey Smith, congressional candidate for Colorado District five.”
Organized by 50501 Movement, many protestors also say they are fighting for due process against ICE, after an operation took place in Black Forest on Thursday.
“It’s very hard to see humans running like they’re being chased by hounds and they’re foxes. It’s dehumanizing and it’s sad,” said Dinny Weber, a volunteer with 50501.
The protestors are also upset about the federal government’s plans to possibly bring two new ICE facilities to Colorado Springs as part of the six that are planned in Colorado. Protestors say the city should step in to stop the proposal.
“I like to think of it as we are the sharp end of the spear that is going to poke that beast in Washington, D.C. and kill it,” said Tom Howes, a protestor.
Organizers stated that the protests, intended to be peaceful, aim to unite the community against the Trump administration and “its ongoing threats to democracy, human rights, and the environment,” and that the event is about standing up for “justice, truth, and equity.”
The event also featured keynote speakers, resource tables, art, and music.
