(EL PASO COUNTY, Colo.) — The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office (EPSO) reported a shooting between deputies and a suspect on late Friday evening, July 18, after the suspect grabbed and used the deputy’s taser during a fight.
According to EPSO, around 11:30 p.m., deputies responded to a disturbance at the 6500 block of Tranters Creek Way, near Fontaine Boulevard and Jimmy Camp Creek, in the Security-Widefield area of unincorporated El Paso County, in which the neighbor who called about the incident said there was a disturbance at the home next door and they believed a firearm was involved.
EPSO stated that when deputies arrived, they found a firearm in the driveway of the home, and made contact with a man and a woman, and began investigating the incident. When deputies tried to detain the man, he allegedly became physically aggressive toward deputies and grabbed a taser off one of the deputies.
According to EPSO, the suspect fired a taser as a fight began between the suspect and the deputies. EPSO reported that at least two deputies fired at least one round each, hitting the suspect. Deputies began to administer medical aid to the suspect until medical personnel arrived and took over. A few minutes later, the suspect was pronounced dead on the scene.
Two deputies had received minor injuries during the incident and were taken to the hospital for treatment. No other community members were injured. According to policy, the deputies have been placed on leave, and the Colorado Springs Police Department is leading the investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
