(COLORADO SPRINGS) — A family who needed a break received a huge blessing on Saturday, June 21, after they moved into their new house, gifted by the Pikes Peak Habitat for Humanity.
Daycare teacher Tamara and her two sons have lived in an apartment for two years in an area where shootings have occurred, with bullets even hitting their apartment.
Their new house is located in the Ridge Sand Creek neighborhood and was built to remember Paul Johnson, Pikes Peak Habitat for Humanity’s Executive Director, who passed away in 2024.
The family said it is a blessing to afford a home in a safe and secure neighborhood.
“When you come from an overcrowded situation and you’re paying more than 50% of your income towards housing, you can’t really concentrate on being healthy mentally, physically, and [having] time for your family,” said Chris Lewis, CEO of Pikes Peak Habitat for Humanity. “So when they will now be moving into this home with the mortgage matching her income at 30%, her mental health and her physical health will improve. She’ll have more time for her kids.”
