(COLORADO SPRINGS) — On Wednesday, May 28, the Thunderbirds underwent a practice flight ahead of the U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA) graduation, and they had a special guest on board.
Kyle Westmoreland is not just a professional golfer; he is also a 2014 Academy graduate.
“I’ve seen it from graduation. I’ve seen them fly over, it doesn’t do it justice,” Westmoreland said. “You know, what they’re actually doing in there is really cool.”
With just a day of preparation and training, Westmoreland took off with the elite team of pilots for the test run on Wednesday.
“We learned how to put a flight suit on, we learned how to B.L.F [Bare line of fire] out if we have to eject, we ate some lunch and then we tried not to throw up our lunch,” Westmoreland joked.
Westmoreland made history at the 2021 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines, becoming the first ever USAFA graduate to qualify for the event. Even with his accomplishments, this ride was more than he thought it would be.
“This is like, you know, more than I could ever imagine. Awesome experience for me,” Westmoreland told FOX21 News.
The Thunderbirds are set to fly over the USAFA graduation on Thursday morning, May 29.
