(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Pikes Peak Habitat for Humanity is celebrating Veterans’ Day by giving away a home to Willie, a U.S. Army veteran, and his wife, Barbara.
Willie and Barbara currently live in an unsafe area without air conditioning, and their apartment is on the third floor, which poses additional challenges.
Barbara expressed her excitement about having a key to her own house and a place where her grandkids can visit.
“Also want to thank the countless volunteers and the donors, all of the people who put in hard work for us. You didn’t even know us, but y’all took a chance on us; we appreciate you,” said Barbara.

The new home will be a two-bedroom house with no stairs, making it easier for Willie and Barbara to navigate. It will also include a mini-split air-conditioning system, which is installed in all Pikes Peak Habitat builds.
This initiative marks Pikes Peak Habitat’s 6th veterans build, and the organization has partnered with more than 325 families in El Paso County.
The move to their new home will provide Willie and Barbara with a safer and more comfortable living environment, fulfilling Barbara’s dream of having a place for her family to gather.
