(PUEBLO COUNTY, Colo.) — The Pueblo Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) has released more information on the next steps in filling the vacant office following the resignation of former County Coroner Brian Cotter.
According to the BOCC, with Cotter’s resignation effective Tuesday, Sept. 2, the office of the coroner is now vacant.
“Pueblo County extends its gratitude to the El Paso County and Fremont County Coroner Offices who continue to serve our community with professionalism during this transition,” the BOCC said.
The next steps include identifying qualified candidates and naming an interim coroner until the next general election, which according to Colorado law, is the BOCC’s responsibility.
Under Colorado statute:
- All vacancies in any county office, except that of county commissioner, shall be filled by appointment by the BOCC of the county in which the vacancy occurs.
- The appointed individual will serve until the next general election, at which time the vacancy shall be filled by election.
The BOCC said it will begin the process of of identifying candidates, and has posted some the necessary qualifications as well as a link to apply on the County’s website. The closing date to apply is Sept. 9.
The BOCC said it will appoint a new coroner in the month of September, pursuant to Colorado law. The position will then be placed on the ballot for the next general election in November 2026, allowing the voters to elect their next coroner.
