(CAÑON CITY, Colo.) — A 25-year-old man has been arrested on multiple charges after he allegedly attacked a parishioner at a church in Cañon City.
According to the Cañon City Police Department (CCPD), shortly before 3 a.m. on Saturday, May 3, officers responded to St. Michael’s Catholic Church off College Avenue on a report of a suspicious person. When they arrived, officers met with a 51-year-old parishioner at the church who reported having been assaulted. The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment of his injuries.
Over the course of several days, CCPD said officers collected video surveillance footage and evidence, and the suspect was identified as 25-year-old Delaney Sam. On Monday, May 19, Sam was arrested on a warrant for second degree assault, menacing, and possession of an illegal weapon.
“Although this appeared to be a random act of violence, our community and officers took it seriously, fueling their efforts to resolve the case, said Police Chief John Schick. “I think the community can feel a little safer this evening with this violent offender off the streets of Canon
City.”
Sam is being held without bond by the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office until he can be brought before a judge and be advised of his charges.
