(COLORADO SPRINGS) — A suspect in a La Junta attempted murder case was arrested after barricading himself in a home on the east side of Colorado Springs on Thursday, Aug. 21.
According to the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD), around 3 p.m. on Thursday, CSPD tactical units were assisting the U.S. Marshals Service with contacting a suspect with an active warrant for attempted first degree-murder out of La Junta. Law enforcement positively identified the suspect, 40-year-old Chezaray Chavez, at a home in the 5300 block of Gentle Wind Road, near Stetson Hills Boulevard and Peterson Road.
Announcements were made ordering Chavez to come out, but Chavez barricaded himself inside the home. Just before 4:30 p.m., a shelter-in-place order was issued for the immediate area, and officers attempted multiple times to de-escalate the situation.
Eventually, chemical irritants were used, and Chavez surrendered without incident. The shelter-in-place was lifted just before 7:30 p.m.
Chavez was booked into the El Paso County Jail on an attempted first-degree murder out of La Junta.
