(LEADVILLE, Colo.) — Leadville is full of history everywhere you look, and you can find much of it on the walls of the Heritage Museum.
From artifacts of the original railway to the uniforms of the 10th Mountain Division, along with artifacts from the mining boom, the Heritage Museum holds stories of the many things Leadville is well known for.
There are also stories that are less well-known, such as the Ice Palace, built complete with ballrooms, bars, and rooms to stay in to help draw tourists to Leadville after the mining boom–stories that have scale models and word of mouth to prove they ever existed.
“This organization’s been going, I think, for like 55 years. I think it was an accumulation of the historical society, which I don’t know that there is one in Leadville any longer, but it was something that the people before us decided that they wanted to make sure that it wasn’t forgotten,” said Chuck Burton, Volunteer, Heritage Museum.
The Heritage Museum is a non-profit that is funded by visitors’ admission tickets.
