(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Three teenage girls were caught and charged after detectives spotted them in a stolen car, leading to a car chase through town, followed by a foot chase through people’s backyards before they were finally caught a little after 12:30 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 22, according to the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD).
CSPD reported that detectives of the motor vehicle theft unit were made aware of a stolen Honda Pilot in the area of East Platte Avenue and North Murray Boulevard as a part of the Beat Auto Theft Through Law Enforcement (BATTLE) deployment. The Honda Pilot had been reported stolen on Friday, Sept. 19. A Colorado State Patrol air unit assisted CSPD in monitoring the vehicle.
As detectives observed the stolen vehicle, they discovered it was being driven by a teenage girl, and three other teenage girls were passengers in the car. According to CSPD, police tried to pull the car over, but the vehicle sped away from the police in a reckless manner. The Honda finally stopped in the area of North Union Boulevard and Briargate Boulevard in the 2400 block of Elite Terrace.
According to CSPD, the teens jumped out of the car and ran from the police, illegally jumping through the backyards of homes in the area. Police were quickly able to catch the girls in the 2600 block of Lear Drive, about a block away.
CSPD reported that a large sum of cash was found on the teen driver, who was arrested for Vehicular Eluding and Motor Vehicle Theft. The other three teens were also charged with Motor Vehicle Theft. They were all served with a summons and released to their parents.
