(SECURITY-WIDEFIELD, Colo.) — According to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office (EPSO), investigators believe human remains found in an attic in Security-Widefield on Monday, Aug. 11, are those of a man who has been missing since December of 2024.
EPSO said dispatchers received a call on Monday reporting the discovery of a dead body in the attic of a home in the 4300 block of McGrew Circle, near South Academy Boulevard and Bradley Road in Security-Widefield. The body was reportedly discovered by contractors who were conducting a mold inspection.
According to EPSO, the home had been connected to a missing person investigation that began in December of 2024, when 41-year-old Rueben Matthews was reported missing after leaving his home on McGrew Circle.
According to previously released information from EPSO, Matthews left following a domestic dispute related to a relationship ending, and never contacted friends or family.
EPSO said investigators believe the body found on Monday is Matthews based on physical characteristics and other evidence at the scene, though an official identification will be made by the El Paso County Coroner. The coroner will also determine the official cause and manner of death.
“Currently, this is an active and ongoing investigation,” EPSO said. “The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office extends its deepest condolences to Mr. Matthews’ family and friends during this difficult time.”
