(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) released a Significant Event Briefing video related to the Officer-Involved Shooting that happened on Aug. 22 in the area of Galley Road and North Powers Boulevard.
According to CSPD, on Aug. 22, just before 3 p.m., detectives with CSPD’s Violent Offender Task Force located the SUV of a suspect identified as 42-year-old Cole Daniel Vannucci, wanted for First-Degree Kidnapping. Police contacted Vannucci, identifying themselves as police and informing him that he was under arrest, and commanded him to leave his vehicle. Vannucci tried to drive away, but the police used their cars to pin Vannucci’s SUV
Police continued to ask the suspect to leave the vehicle, but the suspect didn’t comply. CSPD said an officer used a 40mm impact round to break the back window of the SUV so that police could use tear gas to gain compliance from the suspect.
Before gas could be used, police saw Vannucci with a gun, leaving the SUV, and confronting the officers with the gun. Two officers fired their guns at Vannucci, hitting him.
Police rendered medical aid until paramedics arrived. When paramedics got to the scene, they declared Vannucci dead on the scene. Police learned the weapon Vannucci was holding was an airsoft gun that looked like an MP5 with no orange safety markings.
The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene and started an investigation as per Colorado Law. EPSO is still investigating
