(PUEBLO, Colo.) — The Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) has confirmed it previously had a contract with former Pueblo County Coroner Brian Cotter.
The CDOC said the contract with Cotter began Jan. 1, 2024 and expired on June 30, 2025, adding it was not aware of any wrongdoing by Cotter until the allegations were made public. It’s unclear at this time if any of the more than 20 bodies discovered in August at the mortuary Cotter owned with his brother were inmates.
Cotter reportedly told investigators that some of the remains found in a hidden room at Davis Mortuary had been awaiting cremation for more than 15 years.
“We are deeply troubled by the allegations that have come to light regarding the Pueblo County Coroner and Cotter Family Funeral Services,” the CDOC said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with the victims and their families who are processing this additional burden on top of their profound loss.”
According to the CDOC, since the expiration of its contract with Cotter, it has contracted locally for cremation services.
