(CHAFFEE COUNTY, Colo.) — A person is facing misdemeanor animal cruelty charges after multiple dead puppies and chickens were found on their property following an anonymous tip.
According to the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office (CSO), on Aug. 27, dispatchers received an anonymous tip regarding possible animal cruelty occurring at a property west of Salida. When the responding deputy arrived, CCSO said he found three puppies and two chickens already dead. Two other puppies were found on the property along with an adult dog.
The deputy said none of the dogs had access to food or water, and due to the poor living conditions, the three surviving dogs were confiscated.
Ark Valley Humane Society responded to transport the surviving dogs and to provide them with immediate care. Unfortunately, because of their poor condition, one of the surviving puppies died a short time later after being removed from the home. The deceased puppies were also seized for examination.
A veterinarian from Humane Colorado’s Animal Protection Team completed the necropsies of the dogs and determined that all four puppies died from severe dehydration, starvation, secondary infections, and lack of veterinary care.
The owner of the dogs, 29-year-old Sage Maupin, was arrested Oct. 2 after the final medical reports were received. Maupin was released from the Chaffee County Detention Center on a $1,000.00 personal recognizance bond for six counts of cruelty to animals, all class 1 misdemeanors.
