(CAÑON CITY, Colo.) — The Cañon City Council approved a municipal ordinance making it officially illegal to be cruel to cats within the city as of July 21, according to the Cañon City Police Department (CCPD).
Part of the ordinance says that “it is unlawful for any person to knowingly, recklessly, or negligently torment, torture, needlessly mutilate, needlessly kill, deprive of necessary sustenance, unnecessarily or cruelly beat” a cat within the city.
The ordinance also stipulates that it is illegal to allow a cat to be housed in a manner that may reasonably result in harm.
The ordinance also covers cases of neglect, making it illegal to fail to provide a cat with proper food, drink, or protection from the weather when you have custody of it. It is also stated to be illegal to abandon a cat within the city. The ordinance covers other situations as well, such as poisoning or recklessly transporting cats.
According to CCPD, if a community member has a reasonable suspicion that there has been a violation of the ordinance, or if they have any questions, they can call the Community Services Unit at (719) 276-5600 and choose option 3.
CCPD stated that if a cat has been found to have been neglected or treated cruelly, it may be taken by a Community Services Officer and impounded at the Humane Society.
