(GREEN MOUNTAIN FALLS, Colo.) — An 80-year-old Navy veteran in Green Mountain Falls is getting his home renovated free of charge. It’s made possible through a partnership between Habitat for Humanity, Drury Brothers Roofing, and the Owens Corning Roof Deployment project.
“We assist underserved communities with home repairs. Oftentimes, these people are elderly or disabled or both,” said Tara Sommer, the Pikes Peak Habitat for Humanity Repair Program Manager.
The homeowner, Walter Kunstmann Jr., says gestures of support mean a lot.
“We see very little of that, of that giving back,” said Kunstmann.
He wishes more people knew about Habitat, which helps many preserve their homes and way of life.
“His mobility has declined more or less, just part of the natural aging process. And so, especially with the bathroom remodel, that’s going to help a lot with the accessibility and showering and things like that. I know he’s really excited about that and just happy to know that he can stay living in it for as long as possible,” added Sommer.
He was also able to get his roof replaced. It’s a labor-intensive service that typically costs $10,000 or more.
“That’s why you have to help people like this when they need it. It’s very expensive. You know it makes you feel good, it really does,” said Ike Drury, Owner of Drury Brothers Roofing.
Water leaking through the attic has been damaging Kunstmann’s ceiling, so crews are also installing fresh wood to help with sagging.
If you or someone you know needs help with their living situation, you can reach out to Habitat for Humanity to get the process started. If you’re able to donate your time, Pikes Peak Habitat for Humanity says it’s looking for more volunteers on Fridays.
“You know, a roof is one of the most important parts of your home, right? It’s the protector of your home. And it’s what kind of keeps you and your family safe and everything like that,” said Dan Mills, the Area Sales Manager with Owens Corning.
