DENVER (KDVR) — The Broncos are just one preseason game into the year, but a Hall of Famer already sees big potential.
Two-time Super Bowl champion Terrell Davis says he liked what he saw from Denver in their preseason openers, and he’s especially impressed with the running game.
He knows what it takes to win a championship in Denver and after watching the preseason debut, he says the running backs might be the key to making a deep playoff run this year.
“For me, I focus on the running backs, right? Again, with a caveat, it is preseason, but I was pretty excited to see our backs out there. To see JK Dobbins looking really good. RJ Harvey got some running in that game. Looked really well,” he said. “I think the other backs responded. More is expected from them this year. I saw that small sample size, but I think I saw that in that game.”
The Hall of Famer says he’s focused on the backfield during the first game, and liked the energy and production he saw.
“I’m pretty stoked about what they are going to do throughout this season. Because if that room could have some production, then it gives our team sort of that right and left punch. We are a team that threw the ball quite a bit. We were in the middle of the pack run. We can have a team that now depends on the game, depends on the opponent. We’re able to run the football effectively that would do wonders for our offense.“
Davis says a stronger running game would give the Broncos more balance on offense — allowing them to attack the opponents with both the pass and the run, depending on the situation.
Beyond the physical performance, Davis says the team’s mindset this year reminds him of his own early seasons, where a belief in their Super Bowl potential pushed them to new heights.

“There’s a lot of Super Bowl talk, which is great. My first year, we went 8 and 8 and it reminds me of kind of that season. Coming out of that year and having a different mindset about where we thought we could go. Not what the community thought, the public or fans, but what we thought,” said Davis.
“What we thought was that we were a Super Bowl-caliber team. After my first year, we went on to win 13 games. We lost to Jacksonville in the playoffs, but I say that to say I think this team has the same mentality,” Davis said. “That right now they believe they are in the conversation when it comes to Super Bowl, but I also think they are smart enough to know they still have to go back and start at the bottom of the mountain and prove it out again. You can’t tell me top to bottom this team this year based off what they did last year, the additions they made, the continuity with the coaching staff and the players, this team is not prepared for that game. I think they are.”
Davis added that the last season’s playoff loss to the Buffalo gave the Broncos valuable experience and he expects that will fuel their hunger to make a deeper run in 2025.
